Why You Should Care About Detroit

Growing up in Michigan, I have only ever had good things to say about Detroit. My family's history dates back to generations of family members creating roots in Detroit. And from my own experience, Detroit's strength and resilience have everything to do with the people who live and support its growth, and it almost has nothing to do with the politicians who try to claim its regrowth. Detroit is a city to be proud of, and in order to prove this to you all.

Here are a few cool places to visit in Detroit:

Number one on my list is The DIA, which I consider to be the best art museum in the United States. The curation of art is obviously incredible, but the thing that stands out the most at the DIA is the interior design of the entire building. Each room is representative of the art that is housed there, including incredible stained glass and intricate layouts. The Detroit Industry Mural, painted by Diego Rivera, fills the walls of an entire light-filled courtyard, alone is worth visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts.

The record label, launched by Detroit's very own Jack White opened its Detroit location in the mid-2010’s, and has become a center of music and innovation. From the black and yellow exterior and interior that pop when you see it to the increbile physical collection of Third Man Records artists and Detroit Legends alike available for purchase. But the coolest part of this space is hidden behind the storefront is the Third Man Pressing facility, where they hand press their records right in front of your eyes; being able to see the process of records being made is definitely once and a lifetime, and makes it worth visiting.

This community-based outdoor art environment brings together the love of art and brings up a neighborhood that had otherwise been left behind. Artist Tyree Guyton created this outdoor exhibit as a way to highlight the abandoned houses left on Heidelberg Street and created an outdoor museum with immersive sculptures and painted exhibits using found objects left over in the city. This free outdoor museum is a highlight of the city and the creativity of the community, and it is a must-see for any Detroit first timers.

This massive bookstore is a staple in places to see in Detroit. Located in an old glove factory, the bookstore holds a massive collection of books. The store is so large that they provide maps for people to be able to find the books they are looking for. With over a million books available, you will definitely be able to find something for you.

While this list is not very long, I hope that some aspects may entice you enough to visit Detroit. It is a beautiful city that is fueled by the love of the community. Don't let the bad things people say about Detroit make you believe that it's not a city worth visiting. Detroit is one of a kind, and everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime.
