Why Battle is Amazing

Opinions from G

An extended love post about my current favorite movie

Battle.

It even sounds dramatic. “Battle” is a nuanced exploration of Amalie’s love for dance, even when she is seemingly lacking passion, according to her Danish dance instructor.

So, why do I love it so much?

I love foreign films to begin with. Not fully understanding a language forces you to follow along more closely. It’s not as easy to zone out and scroll Twitter for half the movie if you can’t understand what’s going on. Foreign films are also a wonderful way to introduce yourself to a new language and a new culture. When watching a foreign film, remember to accept the culture, similar to accepting the given rules of a sci-fantasy world.

Full disclosure though, Norwegian isn’t truly a foreign language or culture to me. I speak Danish and grew up immersed in Danish culture, so Norway is a stone’s throw away. I still do need to pay close attention to understand what’s going on. Any Scandinavian media that makes it’s way across the Atlantic winds up close to my heart.

The nonverbal communication in this movie is off the charts. Dance itself shows deeper emotions of the characters when you open yourself to it. Modern dance can be a little out there, but the chemistry is palpable (no spoilers). There’s a lot conveyed through body language, small cues to pick up on. Also, the soundtrack is killer.

Definitely give this movie a watch, and remember to tune in to Work in Progress!
