What the Radio Has Been Ignoring All These Years

You know what’s really cool? Watching how pop culture transforms and expands over time. Fifteen years ago the U.S. was dominated by pop music, so mainstream artists like Britney Spears, *NSYNC, and The Backstreet Boys were really all that were promoted and all that were imitated.

Now don’t get me wrong; I love pop music and my beloved “Oops!…I Did It Again” CD from my 9th birthday, but our society has entered a new era of music. Songs that are popular now on B96 would have been discarded ten years ago. Particular hits from recent, such as Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound” or even Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive”, have broke into the mainstream by sheer change in taste.

It’s a new sound, a more complex sound, and I love all of the new music coming forward that never would have been broadcasted during the era of unnatural highlights and synchronized dancing.

With that being said, I have fallen in love with a new song off of the “Her” movie soundtrack. Up for an Academy award, Spike Jonze’s film explores a new era of technological love that might not seem so crazy in ten more years. I love all of the artists on this soundtrack, but the one that really got me is Arcade Fire’s “Supersymmetry,” which is the very last song that plays during the ending credits of the movie. It’s not a dance hit, it’s doesn’t have a catchy hook, and it’s not what I usually go for. But there is something about the instrumentals that just wows me.

Even more intriguing? The song is played both forwards and backwards to create one continuous song of actual symmetry. Now there’s a concept that hasn’t been explored very much yet.

Speaking of new breakthrough bands, UIC is hosting a Battle of the Bands! If you think you and your group got what it takes to wow an audience with a creative new sound, send in an application to UIC radio here: http://go.uic.edu/battleofthebands

Of course, the rules:

– At least one UIC student must be in the band.

– You must submit a video of your band performing your song.

– Your band must be able to supply its own instruments and equipment for your performance.

You can submit your application from now until Monday, January 27th, 2014. If your band is selected to perform, you will be notified by Friday, February 14th, 2014 (Wouldn’t that be a Valentine worth getting?). UIC’s Battle of the Bands will take place in SCE in the Illinois Room on Wednesday, March 19th, 2014.

Happy jamming!
