"What's your fav horror movie?" Marvel Edition

Writer: Vanessa SaenzVanessa Saenz

Lately, on TikTok, I've noticed the trend with the question, "What's your favorite horror movie?" that actually has nothing to do with horror movies.

This trend follows with a clip of a sad movie scene or TV show scene with the question and an explanation of the actual scene. The idea is to post something that was horrifically sad, hence why the question has "horror" in it. The background music for these videos is set to Gracie Abram's "I Love You, I'm Sorry".

It's been a trend that I actually enjoy seeing on my for you page and even start to relate to. In this special blog, I will mostly focus on scenes from Marvel movies. Mainly from movies/shows like:

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)

  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

  • WandaVision (2021) and Loki (2021)

*If you are not a Marvel fan... or have not watched any of these movies, please stop here and watch them. Spoilers are coming ahead*

*And to note, I did not put these in order of how tragic they are... well maybe except for the first*

When Loki (Tom Hiddleston) realized that the Infinity Stones, were just used as paperweights in an alternate universe.

This is literary so sad. Everyone traded their lives, and some of them even died for these stones, just another universe to use them as paperweights??? Throughout this blog, I go into more detail about the main character's tragic death. I will never get over this. Never.

Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) lost everyone important in her life. She also didn't have to kill Vision (Paul Bettany) the first time, because Thanos (Josh Brolin) had the time stone either way.

In the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Wanda lost her brother, and even before that, she had lost her parents. Adding on this tragedy, Wanda and Vision fell in love, but of course Marvel hates to see happy couples make it, so their love story ended way too soon. Vision had the Mind Stone embedded on his forehead, and because of that, Thanos obviously needed it for his plan, etc.; he needed to kill him, basically. Wanda was the only one who could try to take it off from him using her powers, essentially also killing him, but they both decided on this. But of course, Thanos had the time stone already so he reversed what Wanda did. SHE KILLED HIM FOR NO REASON. Their love story is so sad. Wanda's after life is so sad. This too, I will never get over it.

Tony seeing his portrait with Peter3 (Tom Holland), that's all it took for him to get the motivation for figuring out the time travel tech. It's something that Peter3 still doesn't know.

During Avengers: Endgame (2019), it's rumored that the reason why Tony actually even started the time travel plan after rejecting it was because he saw the portrait of himself and Peter. It's not confirmed, but it does make sense because after seeing the portrait, he starts to get to work. But what's sad about this, is how Peter3 will never know it was because of him. Especially now that no one will remember him. (I have to stop watching these types of sad movies.)

The fight between Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve (Chris Evans).

I won't get into the details about this fight, who's right or wrong, what teams, and whatnot, but just the overall sense that two really good friends had this type of fight just makes it so sad. However, I do think while they both had valid points, though they also were in the wrong on how they handled it. Seeing how Steve said, "He was my friend," when Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was shown, and Tony replied, "So was I." Sometimes I even look away when seeing that whole scene... it's tough.

Tony and Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) were the only Avengers who smiled at Steve before the time heist...Steve lost them both. & "Clint where's Nat?" - Hulk

I didn't see this specific scene with this trend, however, this is still super sad. (There are other people who think that, for some reason, Tony and Natasha knew about their deaths or that it was coming, so they smiled, knowing it'll be okay.) Like how sad is that.

After Natasha's tragic death, sacrificing herself for the Soul Stone, all the Avengers come back with the stones, except her. Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) sees Clint (Jeremy Renner) on his knees, looking very sad, so he asks the question, "Clint, where's Nat?". It was between them two to sacrifice themselves, ugh, none of them needed to be in that position. I'm still so sad about her death. I cried in that scene. Well, I cried in many many scenes.

The few seconds where only Tony and Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) knew it was his last moments alive.

Tony's face in this moment, realizing that the only way to save the world and beat Thanos was to sacrifice himself. It's crazy to think that all the possibilities that Strange saw always ended with Tony's dead, that was his fate. And I won't even get started on his actual death scene. The way his wife and Peter3 came up to him. I WAS CRYING A WHOLE RIVER. At this point, I'm just gonna sue Marvel.

Starmora... their love story (Chris Patt & Zoe Saldana).

Again, this scene or general love story was not a part of the trend in the sense that I'm explaining it, but there are many videos that relate to this about them. As I mentioned, Marvel does not like to see happy couples end up together in love forever, so because of that, of course, someone has to die. Thanos sacrificed Gamora (Zoe Saldana) for the Soul Stone, and this led to Star-Lord's (Peter Quill) love life being destroyed. Literally shared only one kiss. But actually, in this case, her coming back was what we thought amazing, but as a famous quote goes... "he got her back, but he didn't get HER back". What makes this even more sad was Gamora's quote, in the third movie, to Quill, saying, "I bet we were fun". UGH.

Peter's2 (Andrew Garfield) face when he saves MJ (Zendaya) but then remembers that he didn't get to save his Gwen (Emma Stone).

We all know that in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) , Peter2 failed to save Gwen from falling, leading up to her death. In the recent Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), we see that Peter2 actually does end up saving Peter3's MJ, just in time. In the scene, we see her confused and scared, but we the viewers see poor Peter2's face :(

He was so close to saving his Gwen, SO CLOSE! I'm telling you, Marvel hates to see these couples succeed and end up forever. (still team marvel, boo DC).

I mentioned at the beginning, how this trend has been seen a lot through TikTok, and not only with videos like this. There are many from other shows, movies, or even real-life scenarios. If you want to be sad for a little bit, I suggest going on TikTok and searching "What's your favorite horror movie trend?".
