Hello all you fans out there!
Today, I’m going to let you in on one of my favorite hobbies of all time…
watching Korean dramas!
Yes, I know, as if being Bollywood-and-all-kinds-of-international-dance-and-music-crazy isn’t enough, I just had to start liking Asian dramas.
Darn it all!
But seriously though, I’m chalking this one up to media research. It’s amazing what you can learn about a culture through it’s Tv shows. No joke.
I didn’t know much about Korean drama until a good friend of mine (a bona-fide K-drama nut) starting showing me these hour-long episodes online, most of which followed a simple format.
First, you have the four (or so) main characters. There’s usually a first and second male lead, one who will get the girl in the end (often rich and arrogant with attitude problems and an awful family) and the one who tries but will ultimately fail to win his love from said hero. “Nice guys finish last” could easily be a motto for Korean dramas, though in this instance, he usually loses the girl because he just didn’t have the cojones to confess his love in time.
Such is life.
The stories tend to be variants of “boy meets girl”, whether it’s a well-dressed CEO falling for his secretary (“Protect the Boss“), an arrogant chef unsuccessfully trying to get rid of his stubborn, but lovable kitchen girl (“Pasta“) or a crook pretending to be the brother of a gorgeous blind heiress (“That Winter, The Wind Blows“).
So it’s predictable. The point is, it’s fun, it’s cute and above all…it’s addicting!
To get you started, here’s a music video to my first-ever K-drama, “Secret Garden,” featuring ‘King of Anything‘ by Sara Bareilles. Also, one of the best out there:
…and to completely spoil another great show for you, here’s “Pasta” to the good, old classic ‘Dirty Little Secret‘ by All-American Regrets!
So, for all you hopeless romantics out there -not that I would ever admit to being one myself!- there is a place for you.
It’s called K-drama Land.
See you there!
