Welcome Back, Shakespeare! : On The Grid

"Me and you, setting in a honeymoon."

Honestly, even though my best friend and I always say this quote when listening to Fall Out Boy, and it makes us die laughing, it does have some truth in it.

Fall Out Boy formed in 2001 in a small town called Wilmette. After Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman met in a bookstore, they began the band, with Patrick Stump joining later on along with Andy Hurley.

Some of my favorite lyrics come from all over their discography and they truly show Pete Wentz's artistry and amazing songwriting.

"I couldn't bring myself to call,

except to call it quits

best friends

ex-friends till the end

better off as lovers

not the other way around" This lyric is from "Bang the Doldrums" off their album Infinity on High. My interpretation of this verse is basically that it's a couple that knows they're bad for each other, but they can't stay just friends and will always end up together again, as lovers and not friends. Pretty angsty I know, but this is 2007 Midwest emo; you have to be angsty :P

Another favorite lyric is "I love you, in the same way, there's a chapel in a hospital

One foot in your bedroom and one foot out the door," from "Hum Hallelujah," another song from Infinity on High.

To me, this lyric speaks about how someone loves someone but knows their relationship is close to the end, how they are about to leave, "one foot out the door," also referencing the chapel in the hospital where people go to desperately pray for miracles or their faith is from the desperation of saving someone or something, yet the person might leave either way, just how they leave the relationship.

In 2018, they released an EP titled Lake Effect Kid, which had 3 love songs to Chicago, their hometown.

City in a Garden is one of my favorite songs off the EP specifically,

this lyric, "I love you, Chicago

You make me feel some summer fling

You know that I know

That I owe you everything"

I just love how they never forgot their Midwest roots, even if they became international rock stars and one of the most iconic bands from the 2000s. I relate to this song, and I can say that Chicago has let me explore my passions and study my career, and I owe a lot to this amazing city; my forever home no matter where life takes me.
