UIC Radio is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this Friday, March 6. The event will welcome current members as well as alumni who will be awarded for their contributions to UIC Radio. The celebration will take place inside Student Center East (SCE) at 7 p.m. in room 302 (RSVP here).
Since its beginning in the year 2000, the student-run station has acquired multiple awards and led well-known campus events such as Battle of the Bands and DJ Battle.
UIC Radio’s Brand Director, Tara Bolar, explained, “events like Battle of the Bands and DJ Battle are important because they give students a creative platform to highlight their talent.”
She went on to say, “UIC is full of unique voices and I’m glad UIC Radio gives students the chance to express themselves and craft their art.”
It’s no surprise that UIC Radio has also gathered many cherished memories along the way. DJ John Rose has been with the station for all of its 20 years hosting his show Hidden Treasures of Rock’n’Roll every Monday afternoon. He shared one of his favorite moments from being a part of UIC Radio which shows just how special the station can be.
Around 2008 or 2009, someone sent me a promo CD for an artist named Elisa. I liked the album and played several tracks on the show. Elisa, it turns out, is the Italian singer Elisa Toffoli, who is extremely popular in Italy, where she plays for large arenas. The CD that I had received, Dancing, was her first major release in the US where she was not well-known. She was preparing for her first major US tour with a date in Chicago at Martyrs. I got an email from her management that she wanted to come on my show and also do a free acoustic show at UIC. I explained to her management that we were an internet campus radio station and not that large, but they said that she really wanted to do it to show her appreciation. We arranged for Elisa to come to SCE and do an acoustic performance in one of the lounges downstairs and then she came upstairs to the studio for an interview. Elisa also put me on the guestlist for her Martyrs show as well as a large arena show in Milan when I was on vacation there. She also continued to send me her new releases and thanked me in the notes on her next release. So you never know what can happen from just a little thing. John Rose
Today, the staff of UIC Radio continues to enjoy the experiences that come with being a part of the station. Even as UIC Radio grows older the memories gathered over the years burn forever bright.
