A Great Film About Afro-Mexican’s

UIC’s Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS), Latino Cultural Center, and African-American Cultural Center presented La Negrada on Tuesday, October 1st and Thursday, October 3rd.

Directed by Jorge Pérez Solano, La Negrada is hailed as Mexico’s first fiction film to portray the country’s black population which represents 1.2% of the total population.

The film tells the story of Juana and Magdalena who are both romantically involved with the same man, Neri, whom they both have kids with. Pérez Solano not only shows us the lives of the women and their relationships with Neri but also gives us an insight into the lives of the kids who seem to be following in the same footsteps as their parents.

The acting in La Negrada is not the greatest since there are no professional actors, but there were some amusing scenes. As a Spanish speaker, I personally enjoyed and understood the humorous references though, at times, they seemed forced. It is great that even though the film was in Spanish (with English subtitles) the rest of the audience laughed as well.

After seeing the film and learning how the “other” Mexicans were represented, how their economy revolves around fish, and how poor yet happy they can be, my curiosity for this community has grown a lot. It is just a reminder that there are many other cultures that we may not know about. I hope UIC continues to show these kinds of films to students.

UIC Presentó el Film La Negrada

UIC Latino Cultural Center, African American Cultural Center y Latin America and Latino Studies (LALS) presentaron La Negrada el martes 1 de octubre y el jueves 3 de octubre.

Cuando vi por primera vez el póster de la película, el nombre me intrigó. Fui y realicé mi propia investigación para descubrir que la película trata sobre afro-mexicanos. El evento incluyó refrescos gratuitos y admisión.

Dirigida por Jorge Pérez Solano La Negrada es aclamada como la primera película de ficción mexicana que retrata a la población negra del país, que representa el 1.2% de la población total de México.

La película cuenta la historia de Juana y Magdalena que están románticamente involucradas con el mismo hombre Neri el cual tiene hijos con ambas mujeres. Neri tiene tambien un acuerdo en el cual tiene dias especificos para estar con cada una de ellas. Pérez Solano no solo nos muestra la vida de las mujeres y su relacion con Neri, sino que también nos da una idea de sus hijos que parecen estar siguiendo los mismos pasos de sus padres.

Esta película no es natural ya que los personajes no son actores profesionales, pero eso también le da a la película un sentido de comedia. Como hispanohablante, personalmente disfruté las referencias humorísticas que parecían forzadas. Pero … es genial que, aunque la película fue en español con subtítulos en inglés, el resto de la audiencia se rió simultáneamente.

Después de ver cómo su economía gira en torno al pescado, cómo estaban representados los “otros” mexicanos y lo pobres pero felices que pueden ser estas personas, puedo decir que mi curiosidad por esta comunidad ha crecido mucho. Es solo un recordatorio de que hay muchas otras culturas que quizás no conozcamos. Espero que UIC siga llevando este tipo de película a los estudiantes.
