Parents need their children just as much as their children need them. Parenthood is one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs, and there is nothing like a bond between a child and their parents. However, the Trump Administration doesn’t seem to care about this. It has been reported that 545 children have been without their parents since 2017.
The American Civil Liberties Union reports that two-thirds of those parents were deported to Central America without their kids. Trump’s administration issued a “zero tolerance policy” that separated migrant children and parents at the U.S. border. Even though this policy was publicized in 2018, these separations began in 2017 under a pilot program. Deputy director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, Lee Gelernt, says “People ask when we will find all of these families, and sadly, I can’t give an answer. I just don’t know. The tragic reality is that hundreds of parents were deported to Central America without their children, who remain here with foster families or distant relatives.”

On the bright side, the ACLU committee has been able to contact some of the missing parents and believe that they might have a chance to come back to the U.S. for reunification. The irony in the whole situation is that the 2020 presidential election is coming up, and Trump is responsible for creating such a traumatic experience for certain families. He has yet to issue a statement in regards to this. The Trump Administration clearly doesn’t value all humanity but let’s just hope that these children can be reunited with their parents as soon as possible.
