As someone who spends way too much time and money on clothes, I have to admit that I’m probably a little bit addicted to shopping; and it’s nearly impossible to resist, especially given how many new trends are constantly being popularized by TikTok and other social media platforms.
However, it is also true that these trends feed into the culture of overconsumption and fast fashion that our society runs on. Many of them borderline on micro trendy and lack the timelessness that is required to keep a trend going. Despite this, I have gone through all the new styles I’ve seen recently and picked out a couple that I feel are ageless and will survive the test of time.
1. Mixed Metals:
Why choose between gold and silver
when you can have both?
As someone who spent half of high school wearing silver,
and then switching to gold
ever since Senior year, most of my jewelry collection hasn’t been touched in years. Mixing metals
is a great way to add something unique to your jewelry and gives you more options too.
2. Leopard Print:
A trend that was popularized by early
2000’s Y2K style is finally getting a well-deserved rerun.
Despite what the loud print may entail, this is one trend that
I believe will last for a long time to come; especially since it
already was a famous trend in the past. For many years,
leopard print has dominated the low waisted jeans,
rhinestones, and Juicy Couture tracksuit realm - I’m excited
to see how it will be incorporated into today’s era of more
“clean girl” styles.
3. Chunky Bangles:
I’m no stranger to wearing bangles, in fact I’ve grown up wearing Indian
ones all the time and I own many in
various colors. But I do like the chunkier gold styles that I’ve been
seeing and think they add personality to any outfit - as well as an
opportunity to incorporate some mixed metals with maybe silver
bangles. Personally, whether bangles are or aren’t microtrends, I’ll
always be wearing them anyway.
4. Bags with Personality:
It’s so easy to elevate an
old purse by adding charms,
necklaces, or scarves you probably already have lying around.
I recently made one this summer as well, taking a plain leather tote bag and adding cheap scarves and
jewelry I found at the thrift store. I think it’s so unique and
interesting to look at, and also adds so much to any outfit.
This isn’t the one I made but here’s an example from Kimchi Blue.
5. Charm Necklaces:
Charm bracelets have always been
trendy, but charm necklaces take it one step further by being more
visible as well as having more space to add charms. I have been
seeing a lot of starfish or seashell charms lately, as well as evil eyes
or cowboy boots. I like that they can be personalized, and they have a
very coastal, summery look to them. I’ve found a lot of cute ones on
Depop and Etsy.
Overall, I’m not afraid to admit that I love fashion trends - but this also makes me very susceptible to fast fashion. I hope at least a few of these pieces last till next year, I know I’ll be wearing them either way!
