The Breakdown of My TikTok Addiction

For the past few years, social media has played a large role in everyone’s lives, especially mine. Under the category of social media, there is a variety of platforms that have been expanding and becoming popular to the public. One of the current popular platforms is TikTok, and I’m currently addicted to it. At first, I couldn’t understand why people can be addicted to this rather cringy app. However, after two months of using the app, I have come to realize the addicting elements from TikTok. Nevertheless, I will break down why TikTok can be addictive.

First, everyone must still remember the golden age of Vine and Musically. I’m glad to break it to you, TikTok is the perfect child between the two platforms. Despite how cringy it might sound, TikTok have both the comedic element with skits and trendy memes from Vine and the cringe-worthy, addictive lip sync from Musically. Furthermore, in order to create a TikTok for yourself, the process is easy and approachable with many templates and effects. Hence, editing and publishing a TikTok are effortless. This might explain the growing numbers of video and content on TikTok due to how accessible the app is.

Second, some might disagree but TikTok has a great number of excellent and underrated songs. Many individual artists have shifted from traditional promotion to promote their songs on TikTok. The way it works is if a song gets used as the sound of the video or part of the lyrics become the lines for POV (point of view) type of videos, there will be an apparent increase in Spotify’s streams or the popularity of the songs. Hence, this not only benefits the individual artists to promote their songs and recognitions but also helps the viewers, like myself, to know more awesome songs.

Lastly, the duration of a TikTok’s video only lasted for 60s at most. Therefore, the viewers can encounter and consume more content in a shorter amount of time compared to such platforms as Youtube. Thus, watching TikTok becomes an easy and entertaining activity since you don’t have to invest a lot of time into it. I would say this makes the app more addictive. Since videos are short, scrolling and refreshing your For You page seems to be ephemeral and momentary. Consequently, you wouldn’t feel boredom even if you’ve been scrolling for the past two hours.
