When is the last time you did something impulsive?
Was it a last-minute purchase for yourself? Or was it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you knew you had to take?
My favorite kind of impulse decision is the kind previously mentioned: when something comes up that you’re not 100% sure about deciding to do, but once you do, you know it’s an experience you’re never going to forget.
I had one of these moments this past August, during Lollapalooza weekend.
Disclosure, whom I have previously blogged about, was going to be in Chicago again! I already saw them once over the summer at Bonnaroo, but the crowd was so packed and after hiking all the way across the festival grounds, I couldn’t get a spot early and thus, watched from very far back. (It was still a great show nonetheless, but a show is always so much better when you’re closer).
I didn’t go to Lollapalooza this year, but I had heard that Disclosure was playing an aftershow. But, as per usual with Lolla, it sold out in minutes. I was devastated. They were awesome live and I really wanted to get another shot at seeing them closer!
I was talking with some friends about it all day about how badly we all wanted to go. Hours passed by, and soon enough we said to each other “You know what? It doesn’t hurt to try.”
Hours and hours of refreshing Stubhub later, my friends and I finally landed some tickets, and before I knew it, I was headed downtown to finally re-experience Disclosure live at the Aragon Ballroom!
We showed up early and stood through 3 different small openers. The anticipation was killing me. But our patience proved to be helpful, because we ended up being 2nd row for the entire show! As soon as Guy and Howard Lawrence got on stage, everyone was so ready to dance our cares away.
The Lawrence bothers’ performance was, as usual, amazing. They were really into their music and the crowd loved it. Not to mention, the lights and FX we’re beautiful. I found myself mesmerized by the spinning, crystal-like visuals during Disclosure’s ‘White Noise’ and bright, flaming fire visuals during one of the duo’s most-recognized ‘When A Fire Starts To Burn.’
Disclosure finished with two fan favorites: when we were told to “Sing your heart out, Chicago!” during ‘Help Me Lose My Mind,’ and finally ‘Latch,’ both for which the duo’s trademark Scribble Face appeared on screen singing along to the two songs.
Besides being one of the most impulsive decisions I’ve ever made, it was arguably one of the best ones. Getting there early in order to be so close, not to mention having a group of friends to party with, made it that much more fun to just be there. If you’re not a fan of acting impulsively, give it a chance. It may just be one of the best experiences of your life.
