Violence against Former Presidents
Being the president of the United States is a complicated job. During and after your presidency, there are some people that prey on your demise. Former presidents such as John F. Kennedy, George Bush, and Barack Obama have experienced some of the worst acts of violence. John F. Kennedy was fatally shot, George Bush has had cartoons made about his assassination, and Barack Obama has had social media threats calling out for his death. The threats with Obama didn’t stop with social media. In 2017, 47 year- old Julia Poff from Brookshire, Texas sent explosives that were stuffed into a cigarette pack to Obama’s house. Her reasoning behind this was because she hadn’t received child support from her ex-husband and because she was denied Social Security benefits for the third time. Recently, she has been charged and sentenced for this violent act.

While speaking in court, Julia describes herself as having a “huge heart” and “being too trusting”(Dellinger, The Houston Chronicle). Ralph Edward Imperato, the prosecutor from the United States Attorney’s Office says that “the defendant has zero credibility and her actions are atrocious”(Dellinger, The Houston Chronicle). U.S. District Court Judge Vanessa Gilmore, says, “The court finds that the defendant’s actions were calculated, pervasive and continuous over an extended period of time and she put many in danger including mail carriers and sorters”(Dellinger, The Houston Chronicle).
The dangers of being associated with the term “president” has hit too close to home. Thankfully, Obama and his family were not harmed or injured in any way shape or form. Julia was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her vicious acts.
