I usually don’t write narratives or personal stories for my blog, but this story is so baffling that it had to be put into words and posted online. Unfortunately, it is entirely true. I’m still in shock that this even happened.
To preface: I’m only a casual listener of Weezer, but I enjoy their songs enough to be deeply affected by this turn of events.
This past week, my dad went to a work conference in Las Vegas. The entire thing was sponsored by Amazon, so he got an itinerary of complimentary attractions and activities between his meetings and seminars. From the photos he sent me it seemed like a great trip—visiting museums and eating at five star restaurants.
I didn’t get to talk to him much until he got back, so yesterday I asked him to fill me in on his trip. He then proceeded to ask me, “Have you ever heard of a band called Weezer?”
This caught me off guard. Just a few hours prior I had listened to Say It Ain’t So and Undone (The Sweater Song) on my way back from school. This past summer I would’ve gone to their Chicago show if I had the money.
“Did you just say Weezer?” I needed confirmation.
“Yeah. I went to their concert.”
WHAT.
My body had a visceral reaction and I choked.
“They kind of seemed like losers,” he added.
WHAT.
“That’s the point,” is all I said. I was in shock.
My dad then showed me photos and videos of him and his coworkers in the pit of Weezer’s concert. All for free. How is it possible that my dad, who only listens to Diljit Dosanjh and the occasional Sabrina Carpenter song, saw Weezer before I did?
All I can say is that I feel deeply wronged by the universe. Me, a devoted early 2000s rock/heavy metal fan, having to vicariously experience Weezer’s show in Las Vegas through my dads three blurry videos (none of which had Buddy Holly) feels like the opening scene of a sitcom.
On the other hand, him seeing Weezer in particular is hilarious. They’re such a dad band, so it’s kind of fitting that he went to their concert. If my dad saw The Smashing Pumpkins or Deftones I honestly would’ve lost my mind, but Weezer’s kind of in the middle for me so this experience was equal parts devastating and comical. My dad also brought me a guitar pick, which I’ll simply pretend is from Weezer’s show.
I had a lot of fun writing this, maybe I’ll write more story-like posts for my blog! I’m trying out new things and making my blog more personalized. Stay tuned for new things after break!
Have a fabulous winter break and good luck demolishing your final exams!
