From the snowy peaks of Bergen, Norway comes one of the most innovative metal bands I've listened to in decades. Their massive '70s-inspired riffs fused with the atmospheric vocals of frontman Benjamin Berdous make you feel as if you're soaring through a snowy valley, jagged rocks piercing through the snow. Their sound can only be described as massive, as expansive as the icy landscape of coastal Norway. The band describes their sound fittingly as "Tundra Rock", and their second project of that same name has been in my headphones all week long.
I had the privilege of catching Slomosa live at the Cobra Lounge this past Wednesday opening for metal legends Helmet. In a show dominated by Helmet's legendary riff-heavy songs, like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Milquetoast", the songwriting of Slomosa had to compete with the best. But even in the presence of greatness, they stood up to the challenge, and their guitar parts are still stuck in my head as of writing this.
If you want to check them out for yourself I'd recommend starting with their most recent project, in particular the singles "Cabin Fever" and "Rice" would both make a great introduction. I'm officially hooked on their riff writing and I can't wait to see what they put out in the future.
