THE RETURN OF SAGA
After many weeks, months, and years, the long awaited return of Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples’ masterpiece, Saga, is finally within sight. Saga first hit the shelves in 2012 and ran for 54 issues continuously, until the summer of 2018. Vaughn and Staples had announced at that time that the series would be going on hiatus indefinitely. Since the series left on a momentous and nail biting cliffhanger, readers have been holding their breaths in anticipation for its return. As of October 9th, the pair released an announcement that the hiatus, which has resulted in a long and painful wait, will soon end.
Fiona Staples is a Canadian comic book artist known for Tower Comics’ T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and Archie. Staples’ art is simply remarkable; the best way I can describe it is a perfect storm of
realism, classic animation, and flawless color theory. There’s no one else out there in the comic world right now that is quite like her. Staples has worked with many artists, but her collaboration with Vaughn on Saga is by far her most popular and demanding assignment to date.
Brian K. Vaughn is one of the greatest comic book writers of our time. While a celebrated writer for shows like Lost and Under the Dome, Vaughn is best known for his creator-owned comics. Highly revered series like Paper Girls and Y: The Last Man, both of which have been — or have plans to be — adapted for television, have fascinated the comic community for years now. Also a writer for DC’s Ex Machina and Marvel’s Runaways series, Vaughn is in no way short of acclamations.
However, his best series to date, at least in my humble opinion, is Saga. Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series that revolves around the child of star-crossed lovers, Alana and Marko. Years of exploitation and neglect have resulted in a war between Alana and Marko’s planets. The two find themselves as soldiers on opposing sides and when Alana captures Marko as a prisoner of war the most unlikely thing happens, love. Alana and Marko quickly become two of the most wanted fugitives in the galaxy as they run for their lives, and eventually the life of their daughter. That’s where their story begins. Robot Princes, ghost babysitters, spider assassins, and truth detecting cats all follow in what has, so far, culminated into a truly spectacular tale.
Saga #55 hits shelves on January 26, 2022 for just $2.99. The 44 page issue promises more laughs, cries, screams, and fun. So if you’ve been waiting for this like I have, just hold your breaths a little longer. Or, if you’ve never heard of Saga, say hello to your next obsession and get to reading.
