Sheri’s Spotlight: My Most Anticipated 2022 Television Premieres

Since its creation, television has served as a beacon for trendsetters, statement makers, and countless creative minds who see the world for all it can be. Today, with the introduction of streaming services, the definition and limits of television continue to change and evolve. Every year brilliant minds all across the world discover new and exciting ways to tell stories. Twenty twenty-two is no different. As we enter a new year, we uncover new stories and revisit old ones on our technicolor screens. These are my most anticipated television premieres of 2022.

Abbott Elementary

A dedicated group of elementary school teachers navigate the Philadelphia public school system in this hilarious and endearing mockumentary style sitcom. Created by and starring Buzzfeed alum Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary is a timely yet comforting look into the uncertainty and chaos of modern American education. Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris, Dear White People), Lisa Ann Walter (The Parent Trap), and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Moesha, Dreamgirls) also star. Abbott Elementary premiered on ABC on January 4, 2022 with new episodes airing every Tuesday. New episodes are available to stream on Hulu the following day.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season 4)

Everyone’s favorite bawdy comedian is finally returning to the stage in the greatly anticipated fourth season of this Emmy winning comedy. Fresh off of being fired from resound musician Shy Baldwin’s world tour, Midge is angry, vengeful, and ready to be a star in her own right. This new season promises more laughs, higher stakes, and real consequences for our priggish heroine. Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premieres on Amazon Prime on February 18, 2022.

Bridgerton (Season 2)

This Netflix hit series returns for its long awaited sophomore season. This time around, the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, is on the quest for true love in Regency era England. Jonathan Bailey (Crashing, Company) stars along with newcomer Simone Ashley (Sex Education) who plays the feisty and sensible Kate Sharma, Anthony’s love interest. Bridgerton returns to Netflix on March 25, 2022 as sexy, dramatic, and scandalous as ever.

Heartstopper

Based on Alice Oseman’s (Solitaire, Radio Silence) beloved comic book series of the same name, Heartstopper tells the story of 2 British teens who fall in love at an all boys grammar school. Friendship and young love take center stage in this coming of age tale. Oseman herself has written all 8 of the 30-minute long episodes in what is sure to be a very wholesome binge. Heartstopper comes to Netflix this spring.

Ms. Marvel

The world of Muslim, Pakistani-American teen, Kamala Khan, is thrown into disarray when she suddenly gains super powers like those of her idol, Captain Marvel. This series follows Kamala as she struggles to find her place in the world, not just as a hero but also as a woman. Marvel’s signature brand of action collides with a classic coming of age tale in this exciting new series. The MCU’s newest savior’s story begins this summer on Disney+.

In 1980s Illinois, four newspaper delivery girls find themselves in the middle of a war that transcends both time and space. Based on the award winning comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man) and Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman), Paper Girls offers a grittier take on Stranger Things. The paper girls ride onto the scene later this year on Amazon Prime.

As 2022 marches on, keep a look out for these gems when you’re looking for your latest obsession. Happy 2022 and happy streaming!!
