This Spanish film, directed by Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró, was released in 2007. Rec is filmed as found footage, but despite the shaky camera and blurry shots, this horror film was one of the few that kept me awake at night. Several scenes really stood out to me: I can still see them clearly in my mind due to the shocking and disturbing nature of them.
Rec follows a news reporter and her cameraman as they investigate the nighttime work of firefighters. After receiving a call of distress from a nearby apartment complex, the news reporter and cameraman follow, capturing the chaos that ensues. Horrific scenes break out shortly after their arrival, but the news reported is determined to document everything. It is at this point in the film you will not be able to take your eyes away from the screen, or maybe looking away will be easy... for the faint-hearted.
If you are impatient, do not worry; the action kicks off quickly, and the horror follows shortly after. Rec includes all elements of horror, including jump scares, found footage, gore, realistic horror, and more but I will not spoil anymore. Another part of this film I thoroughly enjoyed was the plot twist, it was unexpected, well done, and made me feel unsafe in my own home.
The thrill and action of this movie are consistently maintained, and the suspense will absolutely eat away at your soul but the jump scares and truly horrifying scenarios are worth it. Slight spoiler: despite standing out, Rec does stay true to the genre of found footage as the cameraman somehow manages to last and film everything!
