pre-game/get ready v-day playlist (thumbtack)

Margarita Mejia

Hey there. You are sorting out an outfit to wear. Picking the right cotton socks to wear underneath your leather shoes. You’re wondering if you want to put on your white dress shirt or avoid doing so in prevention of food spillage. You’re thinking about the differences between the types of white wine to impress your date. Dry, Sweet, Semi-sweet. Pinot grigio. Chardonnay. Am I even a wine taster?

The clock is ticking. . . Mirror. You analyze the narrow gaps between your teeth. You tousle your hair. Have to fix that cowlick, >:(

The speaker is plugged in and connected to your mobile device. 5:36pm. Out of things to decide on, you can’t decide on any music to “pregame” your date to.

Here’s where I come in to help :) Getting ready can sometimes be daunting when in a rush and picking out songs is much of a time-consuming task (sometimes feeling more important than the food you will be deciding on later).

A track I listened to with my partner was “Walk on By” by Isaac Hyes from his album Hot Buttered Soul. It’s an interesting album far from any jazz and soul I’ve heard before. I love his smooth bass voice that blends like butter (heheh) with the sensual rhythms of the guitar. So if you have 12 minutes to get put together, this track is an excellent pick to thoroughly listen to.

Another artist I’ve felt inspired by in this week of affection and love is Alice Coltrane. Also very long songs, there is something in her flowy and magical rhythms that make me picture a classy dim-lit dinner. Her song “Blue Nile” with its blooming harp and steady drum beats is one to get you in the romantic mood for the night. Light a candle in your room and you are now sat in a jazz club.

If you’re feeling like a shoegaze type of Valentine’s Day, I recommend “Be Love” by Ringo Deathstarr. It’s a hype yet soft upbeat tune with a repeating drum pattern. It feels as if it encapsulates a feeling of victory and an optimistic sense of love whether platonic or romantic. If you’re one for adventurous love then this one’s for you.

I’ve added a playlist with a couple more songs added that suit the energy of an affectionate holiday.

Stay warm. Cheers.
