During my senior year of high school, for my psychology class, we were assigned to do a “playlist of your life project.” This meant to have, at the time 18 because that’s how old I was, to have that amount of songs and have each one represent a time of your life. For example, at the age of one, it would be some sort of lullaby, and I would explain the connection, and so on.
As yesterday was my birthday, I thought I would come back to this project but change it up a bit. Instead of just one song, I will incorporate a few other ones that I resonated the most with at that age and even listen to non-stop. I won’t be providing full explanations for all, but for a few, yes.
Enjoy this birthday edition blog!
Age 1 - Spanish Baby Rhymes - Cri Cri
Age 2 - Mickey Mouse Songs
Age 3 - Barney Show/ Theme Song
Age 4 - Teletubbies Show/ Theme Song
Age 5 - Sesame Street - Elmo Songs
Age 6 - “The Best of Both Worlds” - Miley Cyrus - Hannah Montana Theme Song
Age 7 - Strawberry Shortcake Songs
Age 8- “La Chona” - Los Tucanes de Tijuana
Age 9- High School Musical Songs
Age 10 - “Let it Go” - Idina Menzel - Frozen
[At these ages, I obviously could not remember what I would listen to at such a young age. Others might, but I could not, so I asked my parents. My dad specifically remembers the old in the day Spanish lullabies from the company Cri Cri. When searching that up on YouTube, I get a sense of "ohhhhh cute'." Other of the songs I listed are mostly theme songs, and that's because of how much TV I would watch, and that is basically my form of entertainment. I didn't have a tablet or such to listen to music, just from shows or movies. Age 6 was very special to me, I am still a Hannah Montana fanatic. I love everything Disney, and (fun fact) I had a birthday in which HM was the theme! A fun fact about age 8: I actually heard that song live ten years later! Age 10 also holds a special moment in me, as my little cousin was born that same year; I would play this song for her almost as a lullaby, and for some years, this was our movie.]
Age 11- “Roar” - Katy Perry
Age 12 - “White Iverson” - Post Malone
Age 13 - “Talking to the Moon” - Bruno Mars
Age 14 -
“Over Now” - Post Malone *
“Better Now” - Post Malone *
[I was shocked when I saw that a certain artist was on my list three times...one could guess I really liked Post Malone, huh. This was a transitional time between elementary school into middle school. What I remember the most from this list is the last two songs when I was 14 and in 8th grade. What I wrote down in my previous project, "The only thing I can say about these two songs is, I could imagine myself singing them to a certain person. Not the best memories, but these songs said what I couldn't at the time plus they’re great." And with that said, I still agree.]
Age 15 - “Tiempo de Vals” - Chayanne
[This is all quinceñera vibes! I danced my waltz to this specific song. It is a traditional song and was used a lot in the past years, and so during the time and now upcoming celebrations, a lot of girls try to strive away from that song or feel. I remember bringing it up to my family and friends... not everyone would agree or have other suggestions for this dance, but all in all I wanted this song for many years, and I got to dance to it.]
Age 16
“00:00” - Zero O’Clock - BTS *
“La Cancion” - Bad Bunny & J Balvin *
[ I learned about BTS when I was sixteen and at the start of 2020. I started to hear their old songs and learn even more about them. I listened to their latest album, and this song has much meaning, especially with the pandemic starting; it talked about how even with a hard day or bad times, we can always restart the saying and do better. Since then, I am really glad I became a fan; however, it's been quite a few years since I have gone down that path. I think those who also know "La Cancion" would understand the feelings of listening to that song.]
Age 17
“The Kill” - 30 Second To Mars
[In my high school project, I wrote down, "When I first heard this song, I was not at my best, but listening to this type of music made me feel better." From there I heard many other punk rock songs, and that particular genre. I also remember how one day when I was in Mexico in the winter of 2021, I listened to this song as I got ready and had it on replay, but it was funny to me considering where I was and how they don't listen to this type of music, little do they know that I do.]
Age 18
“How Far I’ll Go” - Auli’i Cravalho - Moana Movie *
“My Way” - Frank Sinatra *
“As It Was” - Harry Styles*
“My Future” - Billie Eilish*
[Maybe, as one can notice, these songs tend to have a similar pattern when it comes to their meaning. And that is... about my future, to prepare myself, and for what is to come. At this age, and during the time of these songs, I was heading on the plan to graduate from high school. While the first song may seem cheesy and from a cartoon, THE LYRICS STILL HIT. The classics of Frank Sinatra will also always get to me, and still do now that I'm in college and have a lot in mind. It may all seem a little sappy, but their melodies are one to hear when you feel confused and uncertain about what is to come.]
Age 19
"Little Freak" - Harry Styles
“Trellas” - Bad Bunny
“DAKITI” - Bad Bunny
[For this time period and this age, I was starting college, and so not much has changed from the previous songs. However, something that does stick with me is how I saw Harry Styles Live a few days after my birthday. The other songs are actually taken from my "heard the most" playlists. And after realizing that is true, I might have still had a Bad Bunny phase...I saw him live in 2022 too. Fun Fact: This is the age I came to the conclusion that Taylor Swift's Folklore album is my number 1, top fav.]
Age 20
“Que Te Vaya Bien” - Julion Alvarez *
“Es Por Ti” - Banda Llano Verde *
"Solita" - Lenin Ramirez & Luis R Conriquez *
"Amargura" - Karol G *
[For specifics, during this age, it was 2023, and I spent my winter and summer vacation in Mexico with my family. This was the first year I got to go twice, and that made me feel great. I love spending time with my cousins and going back to my second home. So for that, I noticed my Spotify and Apple Music "most heard songs" all came out to be Spanish music, specifically the ones I got from my time in Mexico. I would get back to Chicago and listen to these songs and get reminded of my time there. There are other personal reasons as to why, but mainly this year, I heard everything and everything in Spanish. Genres like Corridos, Banda, Reaggeton, etc. are stuff I would listen to the most, and because I attended my first
Latino Music Festival.]
Age 21
“Vienna” Billy Joel
“Space Song” - Beach House
[Well... I just turned 21, so how could it be that I already have a list for this year, right? I noticed that for days and weeks now, I've listened to Vienna every day and almost on repeat. I started to resonate with the lyrics, and it even reminded me of the patter of music I faced when I was 18. "Slow down" is one of the phrases in the song. I need to really follow the advice that this song specifies. There is too much going on in my personal, academic, etc. life that it will be okay if I take "a day or two." With that said, I do encourage our audience to listen to this song if you think you're not where you're supposed to be in this chapter/timeline of your life.]
To the audience, have you ever thought about this idea, to make a playlist of your life? Try it out!
