Disclaimer: I didn't bet on the Oscars, but if I ever wanted to, they shouldn't let me.
Well, the Oscars came and went, and needless to say, I was very wrong (shout out to the one friend who called it; you were, in fact, right). So, I'm deconstructing my predictions from my last post (click here to read)
Out of the five predictions I made, none were true but lets get into the details.
Best Picture: Anora
So I have yet to see Anora, I know fake film fan, but I just haven't gotten around to it. (I have been getting really into Godard recently and would recommend his film, Pierrot le Fou) As I've seen, this is controversial for a myriad of reasons, but I don't quite grasp it as I have not seen the actual movie. But, I do believe there are many other films that were also 'Best Picture' worthy.
Nickel Boys is one of my preferred winners, I quite liked the film and thought it should have been nominated for more awards such as Cinematography or Sound Design. Though nominated for Best Adaptive Screenplay, it sadly didn't win any Oscars.
My other preferred winner was Conclave, which did win Best Adaptive Screenplay, but that was only one of its eight nominations. Objectively, that's pretty cool, but I think Isabella Rossellini could have won Best Supporting Actress.
Best Actor: Adrien Brody
I'm no Adrien Brody-head, so maybe that's why his borderline 6-minute long speech was a little boring to me. I liked The Brutalist a decent amount, but
Adrien Brody was not my favorite performance of the lineup.
I always bet on Coleman Domingo; I mean, he plays my favorite Euphoria character, which is impressive because I really did not enjoy watching Euphoria. I take my favorites very seriously. I walked a mile in the rain to see Sing Sing in theaters, and it was an amazing film! I would definitely recommend seeing it.
I also had Timothee Chalamet down, but he has Messiah to possibly pull his Best Actor or Marty Supreme. I like his dedication, though; it's good to have someone openly in pursuit of greatness.
Best Actress: Mikey Madison
Like I said, I haven't seen Anora so I can't say too much about it but I had Demi Moore down for this one. Truthfully, I hadn't seen any of the best actress films besides Emilia Perez, and I did NOT want to win. If you asked me, I'd want Anya Taylor Joy to win for Furiosa, which was an amazing movie from last year. Or maybe Joan Chen for Dìdi.
Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin
I'm not surprised by this; he did an amazing job. I know a lot of people say, "he just played himself," but I disagree. I mean I don't personally know him but I'm 80% sure he's putting on a show/facade. I thought A Real Pain was pretty good. I do think Culkin's win is partially due to how his character was written (fork found in the kitchen, that's how acting works), So I guess I was a bit disappointed there was no 'Best Original Screenplay,' but I can live with it,
Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldana
Well...Emilia Perez won a few Oscars, and one of them was Best Supporting Actress. Zoe Saldana is in Avatar (Blue people) but she wins an Oscar for this???? That would make sense if her performance were actually good (it wasn't). It could have been ANYONE ELSE like Ariana Grande, which would be better than this because Emilia Perez is genuinely the worst thing I've ever seen. If I ever meet Jaques Audiard, something dramatic will happen, and it won't be good. The film itself is just boring and stereotypical. You could not PAY ME to watch it again. I hear "La Vaginoplastia" (literally the name of the song), and I start crying due to the mental anguish it causes me. If Emilia Perez has zero haters, there was an extinction-level event.
In all other categories, Dune 2 won 2 Oscars, very happy about that. Daniel Blumberg, composer for The Brutalist, made out with his director Brady Corbet after winning Best Original Score. Emilia Perez won 'Best Original Song' for "El Mal" (not "La Vaginoplastia"), and the songwriters started singing on stage. Did they do a James Bond tribute for some reason? There is no new James Bond movie or anything so idk. Anora sparked INSANE discourse on the World Wide Web. No Daniel Craig Queer and that was the Oscars!
