Is Lupe Fiasco Back?

Lupe Fiasco recently released his latest album Tetsuo & Youth. The past few weeks I have been taking in this album. I didn’t know what to expect from this album because Lupe Fiasco’s previous two albums haven’t been too good at all to be honest. Lupe Fiasco began his career with two great albums, Food & Liquor and The Cool. Since then we never really got the same music from him but now it looks like the old Lupe Fiasco is back.

Lupe Fiasco entered an unfortunate bump in his career after the release of The Cool. Atlantic Records and Lupe started to have disagreements about the music he was going to put out. They wanted “commercial” music and he didn’t want to do that. Lupe Fiasco’s fans, including myself, were not satisfied with Lasers and Food & Liquor II because we all knew Lupe was so much better than the music he was putting out.

I personally thought this was going to be Lupe Fiasco’s career from now on. I thought he was only going to continue to put out music that was “commercially appealing”. I began to think that he would never again be the rapper he once was early in his career.

Tetsuo & Youth Album Art

Then came Tetsuo & Youth. Lupe Fiasco sure did prove me wrong. I had no idea what to expect but then I read that this was Lupe’s last album under Atlantic Records and that they would give him all the freedom he wanted with the album. Previous to the release of the album I wasn’t really too excited about it. I was going to check it out regardless but I wasn’t sure if Lupe would put something great out because he had all the freedom to do so or if he would put out something really bad just to spite Atlantic Records. You never know with Lupe.

Once you listen to the album you quickly find out that Lupe wanted to put something great together and I’m glad he did. We needed this. The second track off of this album is freaking insane! “Mural” is a perfect example of how great Lupe Fiasco can truly be when given the freedom to do what he wants to do. Just listen to it below and you’ll see what I mean.

I had to replay “Mural” like 20 times when I first heard it. I just couldn’t get over how great it was. Moving on from that track though. The whole album is great. Lupe really showcases what he has been holding back on the past few years. His previous two albums were disappointing. This album is on another level though. He finally has some beats that fit him and his style. That makes the album so much more enjoyable.

Aside from “Mural”, “Chopper” is another one of my favorites from the album.

Lupe Fiasco is back to his normal self. Lets just hope he stays that way. Tetsuo & Youth was his last album under Atlantic Records so we’ll see if he decides to sign with another label or go independent. I have a feeling he will take the independent route but who knows. For now give this album a listen above and let me know what you think.
