In Defense Of Pop Music — Pop Music Isn’t Boring, You Are

You can learn a lot about a person from their favorite music. For example, if you look through my March ‘18 Spotify playlist, you can learn that I’ve been repressing my latest existential crisis with excessive partying. Shuffling through Marina and the Diamonds, Are You Satisfied? to Tyler, The Creators, I Ain’t Got Time! to Lorde’s, Liability, and back around to Charli XCX’s I Got It, clearly I’ve been on a rollercoaster of highs and lows this month.

A lot of that stems back to being in a creative rut. The hard part about being a visionary with absolutely no talent is feeling the need to create and put out into the universe, but not feeling confident enough to actually put out the work. It’s a cycle of feeling frustrated that I’m not expressing my creative needs, creating something to express it, hating it, throwing it out, and then going back to phase one of frustration. And instead of sitting myself down and forcing myself out of this rut, I’ve just been becoming bff’s with four lokos.

luv feeling like im 16 again < 3

But my current love-hate relationship with creating music isn’t the point of this post. Going back to my first statement, you can learn a lot about a person from their favorite music.

Over the past weekend I hung out with a new group of people, just to find out that they all completely despise any form of pop music. Including Lorde and Charli XCX. tragic.

I love pop music. Pop girls especially. A pop girl could breathe and I’d be like ‘okay, wig

Now this brings me to something that I absolutely cannot figure out: why do people think it’s so lame to admit that pop music is good??

I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve been patronized by indie kids for admitting that I love pop. And I just don’t get it.

Look sister, don’t get me wrong, I like indie music and r&b and rap ect… but… pop music.. is fun. It’s good — and if you say otherwise, well I’m sorry that you’re boring and I’ll pray for you.

Bottom line, if you try to tell me that you’re 2-cool-4-pop, we probably won’t be friends. But if you still want to argue with me that pop music isn’t, “real” music, I suggest you checkout the following artists and then try again:

  1. Allie X

If you know me, then you probably figured I would start out this list with Allie X. Queen of dark pop. Queen of vocals. Queen of songwriting. Invented the letter X.

Favs from Allie: That’s So Us / Prime  / Casanova

2. Charli XCX

Edgy. Dynamic. Pop icon of our generation. Optimal party bangers. it’s charli baby.

Favs from Charli: I Got It  / Babygirl / Unlock It

3. Kim Petras

Kim Petras is new to the pop scene and I cannot wait for her to get the recognition she deserves. Insane vocals…pop centered lyrics…2018 will be the year everyone stops sleeping on her

Favs from Kim: Hills / Heart To Break / Hillside Boys

4. Troye Sivan

It is physically impossible for me not to mention Troye when talking about music. Troye has been our lgbt+ pop king since the 2014 release of his ep, TRXYE, but his recent work has taken pop music to a whole new level. As someone who’s been with Troye since his YouTube days, I can wholeheartedly say I’ve never been disappointed with his music and TS2 is going to take over 2018.

Favs from Troye: BITE / FOOLS / COOL

5) Ieuan

King of the 925. King of color themes. Ieuan is a very talented and very sweet boy who I’ve been rooting for and I cannot wait to see where music takes him in the future.

6) VÉRITÉ

VÉRITÉ possess the smoothest vocals with the ability to deliver moody pop jams. We love a dark pop icon.

Favs from VÉRITÉ: Saint / Bout You / Phase Me Out

7) GIRLI

Fun! Literally her music is just fun. Her punk spirit is reflected within her music and everything she puts out is a true banger

Favs from GIRLI: Neck Contour / ASBOys  / Not That Girl

8) Astrid S

Astrid S is the poster child of fun cliche pop. Astrid has the sweetest personality and the talent to put out perfect sing-along pop songs

Favs from Astrid: Breathe / Atic / Think Before I Talk

My name is Tara and I put out articles for UIC Radio every Thursday. I’m a communication and professional writing major at the University of Illinois at Chicago. If you want to keep up with my saucy life you can follow me here:
