Hello! I'm back with another review. Something short and sweet about Short n' Sweet, even. Besides from CRAZY (which I talked about last week, so check it out here because I forgot to tag it), this has been the second album taking up the rest of the space in my brain. I'm going to do what I did in that post and just go through some of my favorite tracks from Sabrina Carpenter's newish album.
Short n' Sweet is the sixth studio album from Sabrina Carpenter and was released on August 23. Carptener has had an explosion in popularity, cementing herself as one of the "pop girlies," with summer hits like "Espresso" and "Please Please Please". I had been anticipating this album for months and was honored she was dropping it so close to my birthday and was unironically more exicted for Short n' Sweet than my birthday. I listened to her album Singular: Act II back in 2019 but didn't keep up with much of her music besides that. Then this year, I fell in love with "Nonsense" and "Feather" and her chart-topping summer singles. Therefore, I was excited to see what Carptenter would be putting out for the album.
"Taste" was the third single from the album with a fun music video featuring Sabrina in a feud with actress Jenna Ortega, where they compete over a guy and decide he isn't worth it in the end. It personally isn't my favorite, but it's still a cute song. I don't really like the argument that "Oh, Olivia Rodrigo did this already" and "that isn't how it works" with the line, "You'll just have to taste me when he's kissing you." I don't get why artists can't make songs about the same thing. There's only so many relationship-related topics out there. And about the issues with the lyrics, they're not meant to be taken super seriously, as we'll see later. I do think Carpenter does this concept better on the song "Coincidence." It has more of a summer feel, and I just think it works better than the pop rock of "Taste." This whole album has a big summer, tropical feel, and it makes everything such a fun and relaxing listen.
My favorite song off the album is "Good Graces". Yes, I'm basic, and no, I don't care. I've heard some complaints that the song structurally is a little basic, and while the chord progression definitely sounds familiar (think Dua Lipa "Sweetest Pie"), it isn't bad. The song is super fun with the message that Carpenter isn't afraid to leave a guy who doesn't treat her right. It could be said that it comes off a little mean, but I personally don't think so. With a post-chorus of, "I won't give a f*ck about you," it's like a little warning to treat her right... or else. Another favorite of mine is "Bad Chem." It wasn't my favorite on first listen, but like, the lyrics? I know it's blowing up and on TikTok and yadayada, but I would be remissed to not talk about the second verse. It's so creative and silly with lyrics like, "Come right on me, I mean camaraderie" and "Where art thou? Why not uponest me?" They're so unserious and flirtatous, you can't help but laugh.
Another personal favorite of mine is "Juno", which is kind of in the same vein as "Bad Chem" with its lyrics. It has a bright, summer sound that sounds super innocent, but the lyrics are about being freaky in the bedroom, and I love some good contrast. The bridge is especially silly with lines like "Mark your territory" and "I'm so f*ck*n' horny." I'm not even a fan of sexually explicit stuff, but the song is just so endearing and cutesy. Finally, "Don't Smile" is a grower for me. It has an R&B vibe, and it's a nice chill closer for the album.
I hope you enjoyed my little review of Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet. I've been obsessed with this album and simply wanted to share my thoughts. I'm assuming most people have already listened to it, but this is for people like me who live under rocks. Anyway, I've been Grace, and I'll see you next week!
