Lifelong Work May Go Unrecognized
This March, many colleges and universities have decided to migrate to online courses to reduce large gatherings and create social distancing in the hope of slowing the outbreak of Coronavirus. However, many senior students are disappointed about missing the last months of their senior year. Here are some of the ways in which the Coronavirus is affecting them.
No Graduation Ceremony
College Senior Brianna Reyes explained that schools are now taking the right measures and precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
“What overwhelms me is the fact that all this can become much more chaotic and that, given the situation, all activities including senior trips and even graduation might be canceled,” Reyes shared.
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) sent out an email on March 17, alerting students of changes to their upcoming graduation ceremony.
We are very disappointed to share the news that commencement ceremonies will not take place as scheduled in May at our universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Diplomas will be mailed, and we are exploring possible alternatives such as rescheduling and/or hosting virtual events to honor the Class of 2020. Tim Killeen. Israel Carpenter, a senior at UIC, shared that he did have plans for graduation which are likely to be canceled.
My initial plans for graduation involved collecting as many tickets as possible since I had a ton of family coming to Chicago that weekend. It’s important to me that they get to see me achieve my biggest goal. I could just picture the scene where I get handed my bachelor’s degree and celebrate with everybody. Unfortunately, with the prevalence of the virus, that moment is looking unlikely to happen — at least in person. Getting my degree online will be a sobering moment for all of us. Israel Carpenter
No Opportunity for Closure
Many students thought they had enough time to say goodbye to their classmates and friends but that is no longer the case.
“I didn’t get to see my friends one last time or do any of the cool ‘end of the semester’ events” shares university senior Zoha Rizvi.
Many students will move to different cities while others simply come from other countries to study. These students will not get the chance to properly close their relationships.
Is There Any Hope?
There are still a couple of months left and students can only hope. Graduation ceremonies could be pushed to a later month as there is still the need for lifelong efforts to be recognized and to have closure.
“Hopefully they do not cancel them or postpone them,” Reyes says. “Graduation is the least we deserve after so many years of effort and performance. Besides, we still have time, hopefully, 3 months is necessary to calm the situation a bit. And hopefully, things will be better in June.”

It is sad that all our hard work and the many days we spent not sleeping to finish an assignment or to study for an exam might go without praise. For many, the idea of graduating kept them going. Now we are seriously considering not having any sort of celebration at all. Not to mention, it might be even harder to find a job after graduating. Let’s all stop panicking and pray in the hope that we can go back to our normal lives as soon as possible.

Los diplomas serán enviados por correo, y estamos explorando posibles alternativas como re-programar y / o organizar eventos virtuales para honrar la Clase de 2020 “.
Sin oportunidad de decir adios.
Muchos estudiantes pensaron que tenían tiempo suficiente para tener un cierre de sus compañeros de clase y amigos, pero se lo quitaron.
“No pude ver a mis amigos por última vez, ni hacer ninguno de los mejores momentos de los eventos del semestre”. comparte Zoha Rizvi.
Muchos estudiantes universitarios deciden mudarse a diferentes ciudades, mientras que otros simplemente vinieron de otros países para estudiar. Los dos meses restantes que los estudiantes habían planeado cerrar esas relaciones no sucederán.
Al preguntarle a Israel Carpenter si tenía algo planeado para la graduación, dijo que sí.
“Mis planes iniciales para la graduación consiste en recolectar la mayor cantidad de boletos posible ya que había un montón de familiares que venían a Chicago este fin de semana”. comparte Carpenter. “Es importante para mí que me vean alcanzar mi mayor objetivo. Podía imaginar la escena en la que me entregaron mi licenciatura y celebrar con todos. Desafortunadamente, con la prevalencia del virus, parece poco probable que ese momento suceda, al menos en persona. Obtener mi título en línea será un momento aleccionador para todos nosotros ”.
¿Hay alguna esperanza?
Todavía quedan un par de meses y los estudiantes solo pueden esperar. Ya sea que esto signifique que la ceremonia de graduación se posponga para un mes posterior, todavía existe la necesidad de que se reconozcan los esfuerzos de toda la vida y se cierre.
“Esperemos que no los cancelen o posponga”, dice Reyes. “La graduación es lo menos que merecemos después de tantos años de esfuerzo y rendimiento. Además, todavía tenemos tiempo, es de esperar que sean necesarios 3 meses para calmar un poco la situación. Y con suerte, las cosas mejorarán en junio “.

Es triste que no podamos elogiarnos después de todo el trabajo duro, después de muchos días de no dormir para terminar una tarea o estudiar para un examen. Para muchos, el entusiasmo y la fe de la graduación los mantuvieron activos. Ahora estamos considerando seriamente no tener nada en absoluto, tener nuestro diploma enviado a nuestra casa. Sin mencionar que la fe de encontrar un trabajo después de la graduación como si no fuera lo suficientemente difícil, ahora es aún peor. Dejemos de entrar en pánico y recemos a nuestros dioses para que vuelvan a nuestras vidas normales lo antes posible.
