One of my favorite albums of all time is Heard It in a Past Life (2019) by Maggie Rogers. Maggie Rogers was discovered in 2016 as a music engineering and production major. A clip of Pharrell reacting to her song "Alaska" went viral online and skyrocketed her into fame. Pharrell, an industry veteran and respected music producer, was left speechless and with no notes after she played her lead single, "Alaska," for him. This was only the beginning of her mainstream career. Everything following this moment resulted in her debut album, Heard It in a Past Life. The album takes characteristics of organic sounds deriving from nature and combines them with the rhythm of dance or house music. She has synesthesia, which I feel makes her more capable of emulating the symbolism and imagery of a song through her music. Songs like "Burning" and "Give a Little" are pop songs, but they also relate to the human experience in a raw and genuine way. Overall, this album represents the inevitability of human nature and how it corresponds with the environment around us. I love Maggie Rogers, this album, and all things related to it. If you ever need something refreshing and new, Heard It in a Past Life is the album for you.
