Guadagnino Film Appreciation (Thumbtack)

Margarita Mejia

We’ve probably all seen the nominations for this year's Academy Oscars awards. I don’t like to believe that award shows should dictate how prestigious or well made a large production came out to be. However, I am greatly disappointed that my favorite film director, Luca Guadagnino, did not get nominated for either film that premiered last year. Having seen both in theaters, I have much appreciation for Luca and would like to dedicate this post to his films he has directed so far. This may or may not have spoilers so read at your own discretion. Here are some songs that remind me of them going from most recent film to older:

Queer (2024)
Queer (2024)

If I could insert a song of my choice into the “Queer” soundtrack it would be “Corazon de melon" by Los Panchos. When I saw the movie I was in awe at their use of “Sin Ti” by the same band playing at a restaurant in one of the first scenes. I love how period accurate it was and fit so well in the environmental circumstances as it was something my grandma would listen to in Mexico.

If I could input a song for a soundtrack for “Challengers” it would be "Walking Wounded" by Everything But The Girl. Much of the film's score contains elements of techno music and I thought it'd be fitting to add to the sportsy element of music by sliding in some drum and bass. The singer of the duo, Tracey Thorn, also has that classy-ness to her voice that Dev Hynes (who is in the soundtrack) similarly has which I feel blend fluidly.

Bones and All (2022)
Bones and All (2022)

And lastly, for “Bones and All” I would add “I Summon You (Cool)” by Spoon. The melody of this song sort of replicates like that longing-ness when Maren decides to leave Lee alone and runs away. The slow and mellow rhythm has that drowning sort of mood that adds on to the notion that you’re left with all that you already have, and there’s nothing to run after.
