Get Pumped

2015/01/img_9834.png

Hey guys! Happy 2015! Once again I am back to blogging every Thursday this semester. I hope everyone had a good break with plenty of rest and relaxation (because I know I sure needed it!).

I can already tell this is going to be another great year for music and I cannot wait to hear all the new music to come. So to kick off the new year, here’s my list of albums (in no particular order) I’m super pumped for:

1. Grimes Claire Boucher had a new album in the works for most of 2014, but scrapped it later on when she claimed “it sucked.” She released the single “Go,” featuring Blood Diamonds, and fans of Grimes’ usual music were not so pleased. After scrapping the rest, she returned to L.A. to begin recording the new stuff. Thus, Boucher seems to be returning to her usual sound for her new album that will (hopefully) arrive soon this year. Listen to “Go” below:

2. Death Cab For Cutie – Kintsugi

Death Cab For Cutie announced recently that they would (finally!!) be coming out with a new album following their 2011 album Codes and Keys. Although the band is now a trio after band member Chris Walla recently left, Death Cab still plans to move forward and release their new album, titled Kintsugi, this upcoming March.

3. Lana Del Rey

At the end of 2014, Lana Del Rey had announced that she was making new music and already had a few songs recorded. Although there is not much information about her upcoming work, with such success with her sophomore album Ultraviolence, along with the two singles for the film ‘Big Eyes,’ and not to mention the fact that she is to tour with Courtney Love this summer, I think we can expect some great music from Lana Del Rey sometime this year. Listen to Lana Del Rey’s song “Big Eyes” here:

4. Radiohead

It’s been some time since we’ve heard anything from Radiohead since their 2011 album The King of Limbs. However, we did hear music from Thom Yorke’s band Atoms for Peace, the album AMOK, released in 2013. Thom Yorke also released an experimental solo album via BitTorrent toward the end of 2014, titled Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. But finally (finally!!!) we will once again hear music from Radiohead this year (more details to come soon, I’m sure).

5. Giorgio Moroder

Giorgio Moroder hasn’t been in the music scene for quite some time, that is until he was featured on Daft Punk’s 2013 album Random Access Memories. Since then, Moroder has been touring and doing his own DJ shows for the first time, including at Chicago’s own Pitchfork Music Festival this past summer. This spring, he will be releasing his first solo LP in 3 decades, and it is said to feature current artists, including “Charli XCX, Sia, Britney Spears, Foxes, and more.”

6. Sky Ferreira

Sky is officially moving on from her Night Time, My Time era in 2015 with a new album (which has not been officially announced yet). However, a fan-released version of her upcoming single “Guardian” has been circulating the internet, which Sky then went on to release as a teaser on her Instagram account and confirmed will be released early this year.

7. Will Butler – Policy

Arcade Fire band member Will Butler announced his solo album Policy in late 2014, and has since released a teaser video to promote it. Policy has been described as “American music—in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, the Breeders, the Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, the Magnetic Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (which counts).” Policy will be released this upcoming March 10. Check out the teaser video below:

8. Alice Glass – Widowspeak

It was sad news to hear that Alice Glass was leaving her former band Crystal Castles. However, she is still maintaining her role in the music industry by releasing her solo album Widowspeak on February 13. Not much else has been said about the album, but the tracklist has been released via the record label’s Tumblr.

9. Kanye West

Every Kanye West fan has been dying for new music since his release of Yeezus in 2013. Well, Kanye gave them just that on the very last day of 2014 by releasing “Only One,” an unexpected collaboration with Paul McCartney (wow this McCartney guy is about to have his career take off because of Kanye!). “Only One” is a ballad to his daughter North, while also paying tribute to his mother. While it’s definitely different from the songs on Yeezus, it certainly keeps fans on the edge of their seats waiting for a new album. Listen to “Only One” here:

10. Modest Mouse – Strangers to Ourselves

New music from Modest Mouse has been anticipated since 2007, but much-loved songs such as “Float On” has been keeping us patient enough since. At the end of 2014, the band quietly released their new single “Lampshades on Fire” to some of its fans in order to get the word out. And it’s worked. Not much else has been said about the album yet, but we do know that Modest Mouse will return with new music with Strangers to Ourselves this upcoming March 3. Check out “Lampshades on Fire” below:

Happy New Year everyone! I can’t wait to hear what 2015 has in store for us and I hope this list helped you get pumped for the new year!!
