Monday, October 1st, 2024, marks the landing of UIC Radio's very own funk mothership: Funkaholics Mix Hour. Every funky Monday from 7-8 p.m. during the first semester, listeners could tune in and learn about funk history with DJSatis while jamming along to the same songs being discussed. The mothership is now taking lift-off and won't be airing through December to complete its semi-yearly orbit around Jupiter. If you missed Funkaholics Mix Hour's first semester of airtime, don't worry, since the mothership will be landing again in January to keep the party going. For those wanting to relisten to songs played on the show, but can't remember the name, DJSatis ($atis on Spotify) has linked each week's mix to his artist profile on Spotify.
The Funkaholics Formula:
Each week a theme dictates what funk songs will be played and discussed. For example: the theme for week 4 was using synthesizers in a song to make it sound funky. The theme is stated in the introduction of each show, each song will display the theme in one way or another. DJSatis will help listeners understand the theme by guiding their attention to certain aspects, as well as give fun facts and history about each song. Every week the mothership starts by taking listeners back in time to the 70s, getting closer and closer to the present with each song being slightly newer than the previous. This allows listeners to hear how the theme has evolved in funk throughout the years.

The Future of Funkaholics Mix Hour:
The mothership will have landed next semester with noticeable upgrades. Most notably: a laser-shooting disco ball, an alien tech sound system with 5 subwoofers, a guest teleportation system, and sound effects. The first two are DJSatis' request and the second two are upgrades set to improve listener satisfaction and focus retention. The guest teleportation system will allow outsiders to enter the mothership and discuss the songs along with DJSatis. The sound effect system, on the other hand, will allow listeners to get a preview of how the theme will show up in a song. Let's hope DJSatis doesn't use this power to annoy his guests with pointless sound effects instead (he will). If you are interested in being a guest on Funkaholics Mix Hour you can reach DJSatis at this email: diegocusatismo@gmail.com.
