What do you get when you combine the power of rock and roll with the spirit of Christmas? The answer: Dee Snider’s Rock & Roll Christmas Tale.
For those who don’t know, Dee Snider, best known as frontman in the band Twisted Sister, and most well-known for songs ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It‘ and ‘I Wanna Rock,’ created and wrote this musical for the holiday season. “Ugh,” groan all the Scrooges of the world, “it’s not even Thanksgiving yet!” Yes, I know, just hear me out.
The story isn’t your average, traditional, fuzzy-warm-feeling-inside Christmas story. Here’s the basis: narrated by Dee Snider himself, rock and roll band Daisy Cutter (although the band accidentally spelled it “cuter”) want to become rock gods, but are hard on their luck because no one is coming to their shows. But that all changes when Daisy Cutter frontman decides to sell their souls to the devil, in “mythic rock tradition,” in exchange for success and stardom.
However, to the band’s surprise, every time they start to perform, the songs change from head-banging-down-with-the-man anthems to what their new found fans call “Christmas rock.” The rest of the musical details on the rest of the band’s attempts to remove the Christmas spirit from within them in a hilarious and talented way that hits me right in the Christmas feels better than any Christmas story I’ve seen in a while.
Not to mention the epic rock and roll finale performed by the band and Dee Snider.
Overall, the entire musical, from plot to performance, was really great and exceeded my expectations, and I felt the Christmas spirit for the first time in the season.
Here’s a promo video for the musical, featuring some of the awesome Christmas rock performed by actual musicians, and Dee Snider himself!
