Favorite Youtube Channels

Writer: Ha NguyenHa Nguyen

Recently, I’ve been spending a lot of time on YouTube. It all started with Spotify Wrapped 2024 being terrible, and its recommendations kept getting worse by the day. I began considering switching to another platform. Apple Music was my first option, but it has far fewer non-USUK songs than Spotify. So, YouTube it is.

WIRED

This semester, I am taking ANTH 102, which is really interesting. After the second class, I wanted to learn more about the subject, so I searched it up online. That's how I discovered this channel.

Silent Field

I find the sound of a thunderstorm somewhat calming. It is simultaneously a familiar feeling but also a distant feeling of a faraway place that I don't know. I listen to this video to sleep and while working on deadlines because it always gives me the impression of the end of the world: terrifying, yet peaceful.

TED-Ed and Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

I don't remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but my name means Galaxy in English, which is a coincidence considering my obsession with the universe. When I was in high school, I used to dream about majoring in astronomy. I read a lot about space and worked hard at physics to prepare for university. For some reason, I gave up on that dream, but my passion for the universe/multiverse led me to TED-Ed and Kurzgesagt. This video is my favorite because it reassures me that I am just a tiny speck in the vastness of the universe. TED-Ed has many other interesting videos on a variety of subjects as well. So far, this is my favorite channel on YouTube.

I discovered Kurzgesagt around the same time I first watched TED-Ed. Their animation is incredible, the voice is soothing, and their content is well-invested. "The Egg" is my favorite video from them. It gave me a comforting feeling in a way that is also uncomfortable. The concept of reincarnation and the afterlife always gives me hope because, throughout my life, I’ve regretted not having the chance to be everyone and experience everything. Sometimes, I wake up and wish I were a different person, not because I hate my life, but because I wonder what it would be like to live in someone else’s skin.
