Friendly Hello and Introduction!

Hello hello hello, I hope everyone is doing well!! I am currently sick and rushing to finish my work for the semester's mid-point, but with the upcoming break, I decided to ask for some album recommendations so I could write about them next week. I got so many wonderful responses, and I want to thank you! I love the support I've received from all of my friends; you're all the best.

This week, I will briefly cover one of my favorite albums of all time: Maxinquaye.

Maxinquaye

Tricky from The Quietus
Tricky from The Quietus

On February 20th, 1995, Maxinquaye was released, a phenomenal trip-hop album with eccentric samples and beautiful vocals from Martina-Topley Bird; this album is a full-body experience. Tricky's low, seductive voice lulls you into a trance, and you ride the highs and lows for the entire album. "[Tricky] thought differently to anybody I've ever known," he recalled. "It didn't occur to me that by de-tuning one to slow it down, both might gel musically at that point. I always think of it like going into a scrapyard and building a car out of all the bits you can find. You could probably build a car that would work, and although it might be the ugliest you've ever seen, it would have loads of character." - Mark Saunders, a record producer who has worked with bands like The Cure.

According to Tricky, this album is called Maxinquaye because it's a mash-up of his mother's name, Maxine, and Quaye--a race of people within Africa--as well as his mother's last name. This album delves into the experience of drug abuse, abusive relationships, sexual intimacy, and fear.
