Friendly Hello and Introduction!

Hello, hello, hello, everyone!! I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend and celebrating this week by doing something with someone you love or doing something you love! Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday, and I'm super duper excited to celebrate it with my wonderful boyfriend this weekend and celebrate our late anniversary :-) Mwah!

My boyfriend and I have had plenty of movie dates at home or in the theatre, and I love making him watch all the different media I like, LOL. One of our movie dates was before we were even dating, but I had him over to make him watch Natural Born Killers. I was on such a high after watching it for the first time with my friends Lily and Asher- whom I love and adore so much- I wanted any excuse to keep watching it. What a more romantic movie than a Tarantino movie.

Overview and Review of Natural Born Killers

I'll try to make this more cohesive than the word vomit I put out last week, but I still want to keep it relatively short. NBK is a movie about two star-crossed lovers who decide it's them against the world and lead a duo-serial killing campaign; they become world-renowned for their murders and philosophy, an authentic Bonnie and Clyde. I'm going to make my boyfriend, and I rewatch it again and just keep pointing at the screen, saying, "Wait, why is this literally us.."

I'll break this up into a very brief interpretation of what I think the movie aims to do, which, in my opinion, is pretty obvious, as well as all of the other aspects I enjoyed within the movie.

Interpretation

I think it's widely agreed upon that the message within this movie aims to mock the way media and society treat serial killers as a whole. The Mickey and Mallory fans rally around them, people wanting to be like them, the media begging for a T.V. series on the infamous Mickey and Mallory, etc. We had seen this behavior resurface when the Jeffery Dahmer series was released on Netflix a few years ago, and how it stirred up the attention surrounding him, giving him this famous title, and sick people glorified him and made light of the victims and their families.

The media does not aim to give rest to the families and victims of violence; it cares about ratings, consumers, and what results in profit. It's funnier and even sadder to see that this movie inspired copycat crimes, which was the opposite message this story intends to tell.

This film also has a post-ironical comedic way of conveying serious problems many people face, which, if left untreated, can lead to a life of crime. The assault Mallory faced from her father and the abuse Mickey faced growing up, they were each other's savior and comfort. Though there is some comorbidity within this, they get angry with each other, cheat, and hurt each other, but they are both so equally twisted human beings, and they belong to each other. They are able to see this even though they carry their damage into their relationship.

Aspects I Enjoyed

I absolutely LOVED the cinematography and the stylistic choices made to give the audience the tailored experience they want you to feel. I think that this movie purposely drags out in such a way that you feel a similar exhaustion they feel near the end: you feel the fear they feel, you feel the excitement and adrenaline they feel. This all, mixed with the mix of animation and old media gags, is so quirky in the way I'm head over heels for it. I feel like every time I watch this movie, I find something new.

Another thing I loved was acting; Juliette Lewis (Mallory Knox) and Woody Harrelson (Mickey Knox) did such a wonderful job, and their ability to act out these hillbilly pseudo-intellectual killers is amazing!! I also thought seeing Robert Downey Jr. act out some Australian media-jerk was entertaining, and to eventually watch him get killed at the end was even funnier. There was a beautiful yin-and-yang to this whole movie, the perfect balance of absurdist comedy and immersive beauty.

One of the best things about this movie, though, was the soundtrack, pieces of Nine Inch Nails, Diamanda Galas, Jane's Addiction, Cowboy Junkies, and L7. So so much more, but those are the big ones that stuck out to me at the very least, and the visual aesthetic was so beautiful. I suppose that goes into the cinematography, but AHH is so wonderful. I love this movie.

I really encourage everyone to watch this movie :-) it's not niche but It's so great to watch during this beautiful lovely week, watch it with friends, lovers, whoever you love.
