Dogs: True companions

Perhaps you have a dog, or, even if you don't, perhaps you are a dog lover. From providing companionship to lifting our spirits, dogs add an immense amount of joy. They come in different breeds, shapes, sizes, etc. with their own quirks, but they all share one thing in common: they make our lives better. Let’s explore why they are so much more than just pets.

Dogs boost our mood

We tend to feel happier around dogs and here’s why. Research shows that spending time around dogs can increase the hormone levels of serotonin (which increases happiness) and oxytocin (also called the “love hormone”). Playing with a dog, petting a dog, or even just watching them play can lighten our moods. Dogs also sense when we feel down; these cuddly creatures may curl up beside us or rest their head in our lap. They are great emotional supporters as their presence can instantly put us at ease.

Dogs keep us active

Dogs need regular exercise, which causes us to lead a more active lifestyle. A game of fetch or a walk in the park doesn't just help the dogs, but also helps us too by improving cardiovascular health, energy levels, etc. Studies have shown that dog owners are more likely to meet physical activity recommendations compared to people without dogs.

Dogs teach us about love and loyalty

Dogs show unwavering loyalty and unconditional love. They don't care about what career we have or what kind of day we had; they greet us with the same enthusiasm every day (happily wagging their tails and jumping at the door). This reminds of the importance of loyalty and being present in our relationships. Watching a dog’s excitement at the tiniest thing such as a walk or our return home, can remind us to appreciate the little things in our lives.

Final thoughts

Dogs are truly amazing creatures that don’t just fill our homes, but also fill our hearts. For anyone who has ever had a dog, it is a bond like no other. So whether you already have a dog, or are thinking of getting one or just enjoy their company, they are an endless source of happiness. If you already have a dog by your side, give them an extra scratch or an extra belly rub today because they’ve earned it! 🐾
