After Grammy nominations came out this year, I couldn't help but notice a lack of nominations in the large categories for one of my favorite albums of this past year, Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves.
If you've ever heard her song "Rainbow" from her 2019 album Golden Hour, you would know that she writes about healing in a beautifully hopeful way. The album Deeper Well is further proof of this talent of hers.
Her 2021 Covid-era album star-crossed hits these topics on the nose, as she wrote the album about her recent divorce, but I think the lack of subtlety and perspective is what made it less universally loved than her previous albums.
Deeper Well is Kacey Musgraves finding her true voice again, and honing in on her musicality and lyrics. The album also felt more connected with nature, which is another theme that could be seen in her critically acclaimed album Golden Hour.
Though Deeper Well may not be her most critically acclaimed album, I think that it truly shows her growth as an artist and person. The progression of her sound and feels incredibly genuine. There are few times when listening to music where it doesn't feel like the artist is pandering to a certain audience, but for me, this album is one of those rare moments.
Deeper Well deserves more love. Give it a listen, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
