Chappell Roan Debuts New Country Song

This past Saturday, Chappell Roan made her musical debut on Saturday Night Live with Pink Pony Club and a new tune - "The Giver."

"The Giver" takes a turn away from the style of her previous releases and features a violin-driven country sound. With lyrics about lesbian relationships, the song stays true to herself while branching off in a different direction sonically. She digs at the traditional themes in country music and spins a progressive twist from songs written by men about loving their trucks and women - because women can do just the same.

Performing this song to such a large audience on SNL was a great move on Chappell Roan's part for a couple of different reasons. First, it's anthemic and can resonate with the queer population in rural areas to empower these communities during this general election season. Second, in terms of her career, it's a great contrast to her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The album highlights themes of city life, while "The Giver" captures the opposite while keeping up with her playfully scandalous vibe. This tune makes her discography even more interesting to new listeners and further develops her brand of glam, cowboy hats, and unapologetically being yourself.

Musically, it's super catchy and impressive vocally as well with belted E5s in the final chorus. Chappell's voice suits this genre nicely and I hope to see her explore more of this sound in future releases.
