bits & bobbles

Writer: Deyi LinDeyi Lin

just some media i've been consuming lately

paddington in peru

the third installment of the beloved paddington trilogy, featuring powerhouses like olivia colman and antonio banderas. i feel like there's something about british children's movies that is less cringe-inducing than their american counterparts (eg. shrek 5, minecraft movie). very fun and very silly.

the perils of appeasement: the lesson of 1938

a short article written by my medieval lit professor on the parallels between pre-WWII global politics and the present day. (link here)

loud: accept nothing less than the life you deserve

part memoir, part self-help book, this was light read by influencer drew afualo. though it was pretty intro-level feminism, i still found it worthwhile.

frank sinatra - miss kittin & the hacker

did i get this song from a violet chachki post? maybe... it's a y2k techno house track with unserious lyrics such as "we talk about frank sinatra / you know frank sinatra? / he's dead."

michael reid anti-fascism papers

held in the special collections floor of the newberry, are pamphlets, poems, and other publications written in the 1930s that opposed hitler's rise to power in germany. reading through these gives me a bittersweet feeling—it is inspiring that there have always been people who have known better, but it also showcases the complicity of the majority. i found chicago's role as both a place of protest and censorship the most interesting.

thank you for reading about what i've been reading!
