American Horror Story Seasons Ranked

I may have started watching American Horror Story at too young of an age but it is why I am the way that I am today, and I wouldn't change that for the world. It sparked my affinity for horror and taboo topics, as well as my love for Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Jessica Lange. In honor of October, the month of freakish things, I will rank every season of AHS besides seasons 11 and 12 (I could not bring myself to watch them after the disaster that season 10 was).

1 . Asylum

The creepiest season for sure! This season was the most realistic as it explores topics of serial killers, Nazis, homophobia, and religious trauma. For me personally, I need horror based in reality to feel scared because supernatural stuff really just doesn't do it for me.

2. Murder House

The most nostalgic on this list as it is the first season. Every character is so unique and it is very exciting to see the way their plots cross over and come together. The Halloween episodes are my absolute favorite!

3. Roanoke

This might be the most unique season as half of it is filmed as a documentary then it kind of turns into the Blair Witch Project. Kathy Bates steals the show in this season for sure with her talent for playing insane people. The only downside to this season is that Evan Peters has like ten minutes of screen time.

4. Coven

The funniest season with the most iconic characters and true 2014 fashion. So many famous quotes from this season: the dialogue is so chaotic and is truly a product of its time. If you like chick flicks and witchcraft, this season will not disappoint.

5. 1984

This ranking might be a bit controversial, but I think the 80s slasher aesthetic was executed perfectly in this season, and it was a lot of fun. The soundtrack was also killer, it reminded me of Stranger Things. Trigger warning, Matthew Morrison is in this season for those of you who cannot stand him!

6. Hotel

I love the style of this season, a bit art deco and reminiscent of The Shining, as this season makes you feel madder and more insane as you watch. A major plus is that Lady Gaga is featured as a vampire heiress, but other than that I found most of the characters insufferable.

7. Freak Show

An extremely cool concept, but the plot gets a bit muddied by the amount of characters and side stories. I also wish they had cast more actors with disabilities in main roles rather than using makeup and CGI.

8. Cult

A hilarious season, so over the top that this season is definitely the most satirical of the show, but it also makes it a bit hard to sit through. Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters steal the spotlights playing contrasting characters, each with their own unique issues.

9. Apocalypse

This season brought closure for seasons 1 and 3, reprising fan-favorite characters and tying the two early seasons together, but there were a few plot holes because of this crossover. However, the concept is extremely cool as I am a sucker for anything apocalyptic.

10. Double Feature

I feel like the writers got lazy with this season as they tried to cram two ridiculously shallow stories that had nothing to do with each other into one season. I appreciated the historical aspect of the second part and how they filmed it in black and white, but it does not make up for the script and plot, which felt quite neglected compared to the previous seasons.
