Spring Awakening’s Sunday line-up was full of familiar big-room and electro house favorites, from Arty to Steve Aoki. All were readily received and wow’d the crowd, but one of the surprising highlights of the day at the main stage was Alex Metric and his experimental, house-based performance.
Alex’s hour-long set highlighted the strength of this DJ/Producer’s ability to work through numerous styles and genres, while holding a crowd captive by music that goes beyond the Drop-Build-Drop mentality that permeates the festival scene these days. A growing number of big-name DJs and artists, from Deadmau5 to Armin van Buuren to Seth Troxler, are concerned that the currently static and non-experimental nature of festival EDM could wear out the popularity of the electronic music scene as a whole.
But on Sunday, Alex Metric managed to not only experiment, but to captivate. He provided genre variety and exposed to a young, energetic, and fun-loving crowd to a wide array of musical sound without alienating them. Working from a solid progressive house foundation, he seamlessly moved between tracks that pushed into hip-hop, electro and tech and deep house envelope.
He’s certainly one to watch as the electronic scene continues to evolve and you can check out more of his sets and tracks at his Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/alexmetric.
