A Night Of Jazz

It was a typical Monday night here in UIC. On Monday, October 21st, 2024, I was invited to a jazz combo in the Recital Hall of UIC. One of my friends asked me to go and watch them play and I said yes. It'll be my first show at UIC, and I will get to support my friend's performance. It started around 7:30, so it was pretty dark out, but that was the perfect moment to go out and listen to some jazz. I'm not much of a music expert, specifically a jazz expert, but I do know that I enjoy listening to these songs. They were very upbeat and made my feet dance to some of the songs. It definitely made me want to come back and listen to them play again. Two jazz combos were playing, one from Tom Garling, the director, and the other from Andy Baker.

The first ones to go up were the Garling group, which played these songs on the bottom that I listed on the first box. These songs gave me very upbeat vibes. I had my head and feet bopping around from time to time. It reminded me of going on vacation during the winter back in the old days. One of my favorite songs they played/sang was Corcovado because of the singer's voice and the instrumental in the background. It just suits the vibes of the night. It made me feel very awed by how good the singer's voice was. It was beautiful, plus the players able to play like that makes me a bit envious of their talent.

Bluesette : Toots Thielemans

Little Sunflower : Freddie Hubbard

Corcovado : A.C. Jobin

Straight, No Chaser : Thelonious Monk

The second group was the Baker group, which played these songs. My favorite part of their playing was their solos. Each person had their own part in one of the songs. You can clearly enjoy each and every one of their talents and how, in the end, they blend very well. My favorite song from them will probably be Eye Of The Hurricane. You might be asking me why. Well, because it just reminds me of a late-night opening show introducing all the characters. It's a bit nostalgic in a way. I can't really explain it. You have to listen to it to know what I'm talking about.

Maiden Voyage : Herbie Hancock

And What If I Dont? : Herbie Hancock

In A Sentimental Mood : Duke Elington

Eye Of The Hurricane :  Herbie Hancock

I definitely recommend some of you coming to the next jazz combo. It's free, fun, and nearby. The next one coming up is on November 22nd at 7:30, at 1040 W Harrison. You'll definitely see me there cheering on my friend and enjoying the music. I hope some of you who will read this will check it out when possible.
