Blog! Blog! Blog!

Nathan Weakley

a few rainy day songs

Hey, guys. This blog is going to be pretty short because I'm very tired and busy. It's rained the past few days. Here are some good songs to listen to on a rainy afternoon.

The National - "The Geese of Beverly Road"

Something about Alligator, the National’s breakout album, always feels like a rainy day to me. It’s very big and hollow, freezing cold, but at the center, the warmth bleeds through, like when you’ve just gotten inside and out of the storm, and you’re sitting by the heating vent. This song is about kids running around in the summer, but to be an adult looking back on it feels pretty wintery, pretty rainy. The lyrics really get me. “Abel” is great, too, if you’re feeling a little more frantic and afraid.

Lucinda Williams - "Fruits of My Labor"

This one’s for staying in and skipping plans. It feels like contentment and oven heat, and it smells like cinnamon. Lucinda Williams is one of the best people who ever sung. There’s not much to say for her because she says it herself. I love this song.

Nirvana - "Marigold"

One of my favorite Nirvana songs. It tastes like molasses and smoke. I don’t know what the singer (pretty sure it’s not Kurt Cobain) is saying but it must be something great. It feels like you’re on your way somewhere you don’t want to be, but the rain’s picked up and now you’re waiting underneath a subway entrance with nothing interesting to think about.

Adrianne Lenker - "forwards beckon rebound"

Have you guys heard songs by Adrianne Lenker? Hey, have you guys heard songs by Adrianne Lenker? The Adrianne Lenker album songs? Okay so basically there’s this album by Adr-

Wunderhorse - "Teal"

I don’t really know why this song hurts me so much, but it’s perfect and beautiful. Jacob Slater has such a classic goth-rock voice, and he always sounds so passionate. This song is one of those that just feels singular and special; like, I couldn’t imagine comparing it to another song. Wunderhorse has another great song called “Rain,” but there’s a time and place for that and somehow, it’s not here or now.

Simon Joyner - "One for the Catholic Girls"

One day, I woke up and this song was in my playlist. I don’t know how it got there, how I found it. Never heard of Simon Joyner in my whole life. It’s raining. This song is gorgeous and calming. The lyrics are a little disjointed and strange (the verbs don’t quite always connect to the nouns), but they cook up a vibe. This one’s for the Catholic Girls.

The Clientele - "Saturday"

The whole first Clientele album is warm and fuzzy and sweet. It’s lovely lullaby music. If you fall asleep to it, you’ll have good dreams.

There are many more I could write about, but the day is long and I’ve grown oh so tired, oh so weary. The rain always wears me out. These are all beautiful songs, and that’s enough.
